The Guide
Dead Horse Point: A State Park Most People Visit with Canyonlands
Separate park, separate fee, same road, and a view that rivals the national park next door.
Dead Horse Point is a Utah state park on a narrow mesa next to Island in the Sky, reached by a side road off UT 313 on the way to the national park. The overlook at its tip looks 2,000 feet down to a gooseneck of the Colorado River, with Canyonlands stretching away behind it. It has its own entrance fee and its own rules: $20 per private vehicle for up to eight people, no reservation needed (Utah State Parks, checked October 2026). America the Beautiful passes do not cover it, because it is not a national park.
It is also a short stop rather than a destination for most visitors. The overlook is a few minutes’ walk from the car park, and the rim trails are easy. That is why the tours treat it as part of a bigger day.
The tour that includes it
Moab In A Day’s small-group tour, in the booking box above, names Dead Horse Point in its title. It spends the morning in Arches (Park Avenue, Balanced Rock, the Windows, Double Arch and Sand Dune Arch) and the afternoon at the Canyonlands overlooks and Dead Horse Point, in a closed, air-conditioned vehicle with a picnic lunch. It takes about 8 hours and costs from $399.46 a person, rated 5.0 from 369 reviews (checked October 2026).
Dead Horse Point’s entry is included. National park entry for Arches and Canyonlands is not; it costs $30 a person extra, or one valid annual pass covers up to four people.

You can also look up at the point instead of down from it. NAVTEC’s White Rim day drives the 4x4 road below Dead Horse Point, and an electric dirt bike tour from the Potash Road boat ramp runs under its cliffs to an overlook of the Colorado; that ride does not enter either park.
Canyonlands or Dead Horse Point?
You do not have to choose: they share the road, and the turnoff to Dead Horse Point comes before the Canyonlands entrance. If time is short, Grand View Point at the end of the Island in the Sky road shows more of the national park, and Dead Horse Point gives the most famous single view of the river’s bend. Both parks are certified dark-sky parks, Canyonlands since 2015 and Dead Horse Point since 2016, which is why the stargazing tours work here. For more of Island in the Sky itself, the half-day 4x4 tours drop below the rim.

Dead Horse Point: Questions
Fees, timing and how it fits with Canyonlands.
Yes: $20 per private vehicle for up to eight people, and no reservation is needed. Motorcycles pay $10, and walk-ins or cyclists $10 per group of four (Utah State Parks, checked October 2026). It is a state park, so national park passes such as America the Beautiful do not cover it. The three-parks tour includes the state park entry in its price.
An hour or two. The main overlook is a short walk from the parking area, and the rim trails out to other viewpoints can fill a morning if you want them. Most visitors pair it with Island in the Sky the same day; the turnoff to Dead Horse Point is on UT 313, before the Canyonlands entrance.
Canyonlands for scale and variety; Dead Horse Point for one famous view. Island in the Sky has many overlooks, Mesa Arch and the roads below the rim. Dead Horse Point's overlook shows the Colorado's gooseneck 2,000 feet below in a single frame. They are on the same road, so most people see both. The Island in the Sky tours cover the national park side.
Because of a local legend about wild horses. The story told in Moab is that cowboys once used the narrow neck of the point as a natural corral for wild mustangs, and that horses left behind on the point died there. It is a legend rather than a documented event.
Look at the view, walk the rim, and come back at night for the stars. The main overlook and rim trails are the day draw, and the park was certified as an International Dark Sky Park in 2016, the first Utah state park to receive the designation. Camping and yurts are available by reservation.
No. It is a separate Utah state park on the neighbouring mesa. It has its own entrance station and fee, and NPS passes do not apply. The views from it look across into Canyonlands, which is why tours combine them.
