The Guide
Why a Flight Is the Only Way to See All of Canyonlands in a Day
Three districts with no road between them, one of them days from anywhere.
Canyonlands is the hardest of Utah’s national parks to see whole. The Green and Colorado rivers divide it into three districts with no road between them. Island in the Sky is 40 minutes from Moab, the Needles about two hours, and the Maze a trip that NPS says rarely takes less than three days. From the ground, a visitor with one day sees one district. From a small plane, you see all three, and the confluence where the rivers meet, in about an hour.
The flight to book
Redtail Air’s Canyonlands and Arches combo, in the booking box above, is the longest of the three regular Canyonlands flights on this page. It leaves Canyonlands Field, the airport about 20 miles north of Moab, and spends 80 minutes over Arches (Delicate Arch, Angel Arch and Wedding Band Arch are named on the listing) and over the Maze, Island in the Sky and the Needles, with the pilot’s commentary on headsets. It costs from $480 a person with at least two per booking, rated 4.9 from 132 reviews (checked October 2026), and cancels free up to 24 hours ahead. There is no park fee, because you never enter the park on the ground.

The airplane is the better value for coverage: it goes further and costs less per minute. The helicopter covers a smaller area and gives everyone a window seat, and it is the one to pick if Dead Horse Point and the Island in the Sky rim are what you came for. Redtail Air also runs a private charter that adds Monument Valley and Natural Bridges to Canyonlands, priced $1,928 for up to three guests; if Monument Valley is on your route anyway, monument-valley-tour.com covers the ground tours there with Navajo guides.
What you see that the ground tours miss
The Maze is the reason the long flight exists. It is a tangle of canyons west of the confluence, reached by 4x4 roads from Hans Flat ranger station, about 2.5 hours from Green River, and then three to six more hours of high-clearance driving. Almost nobody sees it except from the air. The Needles’ back-country arches are similar: Angel Arch and Druid Arch, named on the one-hour flight’s listing, are long hikes or hard 4x4 trips on the ground.
If you would rather stay on the ground and have half a day, the Island in the Sky 4x4 is the closest thing to the flight’s view of the White Rim. The Maze guide explains what it takes to go there in person.

Canyonlands Scenic Flights: Questions
What to know before booking a flight over Canyonlands from Moab.
Yes if you want to see the whole park, and in particular the Maze, in a single day. No road connects Canyonlands' three districts, and the Maze takes days to reach by 4x4. The 80-minute flight covers it, Island in the Sky, the Needles and Arches. If you only want Island in the Sky and the White Rim, the half-day 4x4 is cheaper and puts you on the ground.
Canyonlands Field, the airport about 20 miles north of Moab. Redtail Air's helicopter tour meets inside the terminal; the airplane tours check in at the reservations desk, where the pilot gives a pre-flight briefing. You drive yourself to the airport; transport is not included.
From $392 to $592 a person for the regular flights, as listed on Viator in October 2026. The one-hour Canyonlands airplane tour is from $392, the 80-minute Canyonlands and Arches flight from $480 and the 45-minute helicopter from $592. The private charter that adds Monument Valley is priced at $1,928 for up to three guests. There is no national park fee for a flight.
The 80-minute Canyonlands and Arches flight does; its listing names the Maze, Island in the Sky and the Needles. The one-hour Canyonlands flight focuses on Island in the Sky, the confluence and the Needles, and the helicopter stays around Island in the Sky and Dead Horse Point. For what the Maze is like on the ground, see the Maze guide.
The airplane for coverage, the helicopter for the view from a lower, closer seat. The airplane flights cover more of the park and cost less per minute. The helicopter flies 45 minutes over Dead Horse Point and Island in the Sky, takes up to three passengers and gives each a window seat.
Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund on all three Redtail Air flights on this page. Small-plane and helicopter tours also depend on the weather; if the operator cancels, you are offered another time or a full refund.
Generally yes; the flights involve no walking beyond the terminal. The one-hour airplane tour is listed as wheelchair accessible and suitable for all fitness levels. On the helicopter, infants sit on an adult's lap. Ask the operator about seat weights and car seats when you book.
