Canyonlands or Arches?
Canyonlands or Arches with one day? Distances, crowds, the 2026 entry rules and what each park does best, with the tours that cover one or both.
Arches if you want famous arches close together and short walks; Canyonlands if you want enormous views and fewer people. Both are near Moab, Arches 15 minutes north of town and Canyonlands’ Island in the Sky about 40 minutes, so for most visitors the real question is which one gets the better half of the day.
What each park does best
Arches packs its best-known sights along a single scenic road: Balanced Rock, the Windows, Double Arch, Park Avenue and the viewpoints for Delicate Arch, with short walks from each car park. The arch itself is a 3-mile round-trip hike. It is the easier park for a short visit and the more famous one, and it is busier.
Canyonlands is about scale. Island in the Sky is a mesa on cliffs more than 1,000 feet high, with the White Rim and the rivers below it, and its overlooks, Grand View Point above all, look out over hundreds of square miles of canyon country. It is also much quieter: about 796,000 visits in 2025, the fewest of Utah’s five national parks.
| Arches | Canyonlands (Island in the Sky) | |
|---|---|---|
| From Moab | About 15 minutes | About 40 minutes to the visitor center |
| Entry, 2026 | Pass required; timed entry dropped for 2026 | $30 per vehicle, 7 days; no timed entry |
| Signature walks | Delicate Arch (3 miles round trip), the Windows, Double Arch | Mesa Arch, Grand View Point, the Shafer Canyon overlook |
| Best by 4x4 tour | The backcountry: Tower Arch, Eye of the Whale | The Shafer Trail and the White Rim |
| Crowds | Busier | Quieter |
Fiery Furnace in Arches still needs its own reservation, and so does the Devils Garden campground (NPS, 2026).
If you only have one day
Pick Arches for a first visit with children or limited walking, or if Delicate Arch is the photo you came for. Pick Canyonlands if you have seen Arches before, dislike crowds, or want the drive down the Shafer Trail. And if you can give it a full day, you do not have to choose: the full-day 4x4 on this page does Canyonlands in the morning and the Arches backcountry after lunch.
