Canyonlands in One Day

How to spend one day in Canyonlands from Moab: a half-day 4x4 plus the paved overlooks, a full day on the White Rim, or the whole park from the air.

Updated October 2026

One day is enough for Island in the Sky, not for the whole park. Canyonlands’ three districts have no road between them, so a single day means choosing. For almost everyone staying in Moab, that choice is Island in the Sky, 40 minutes away. Here are three ways to fill the day, depending on how much of it you want to spend off the pavement.

Plan 1: Half-day 4x4, then the overlooks yourself

The most complete single day for a first visit.

  • Morning (4 hours): a half-day 4x4 tour from Moab, down to the White Rim and Musselman Arch, up the Shafer Trail. NAVTEC’s is from $240 a person (checked October 2026).
  • Lunch in Moab, then drive back up UT 313 in your own car with the park pass.
  • Afternoon: the paved scenic drive. Mesa Arch, a short walk from its car park; the Green River Overlook; Grand View Point at the end of the road.
  • Sunset: Dead Horse Point State Park on the way back down; it has its own $20 per-vehicle fee.

Plan 2: A full day below the rim

For travelers who would rather spend the whole day off the pavement. NAVTEC’s White Rim day covers about 25 miles of the White Rim Road, drops down Lathrop Canyon to the Colorado, includes lunch and climbs out by the Shafer Trail, in about 9 hours. It is from $360 a person (checked October 2026). You will see less of the paved overlooks, and far more of the park most visitors never reach.

Plan 3: The whole park from the air, Arches by car

The only way to see all three districts in one day. Redtail Air’s 80-minute flight from Canyonlands Field crosses Arches, the Maze, Island in the Sky and the Needles, from $480 a person with at least two per booking (checked October 2026). That leaves the rest of the day for Arches, whose entrance is about 15 minutes from downtown Moab.

How much time is enough?

Half a day covers the Island in the Sky highlights; a full day adds either the White Rim or the overlooks at a slower pace; the Needles needs a day of its own because it is about two hours from Moab; the Maze needs several. If you are weighing districts, the Island in the Sky or Needles guide helps, and the entrance fee guide covers which pass to buy if you are also visiting Arches.
